About Midwifery Care

What Is Midwifery Care?

In Ontario, midwives are funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. This means midwifery care—including pregnancy, labour, birth, and postpartum support—is fully covered if you are a resident of Ontario. There is no cost to you.

Midwives are primary care providers. You do not need a doctor’s referral to access our services. Simply complete the online intake form to begin. If you have questions, call us directly at 519-568-8282.

Eligibility and Access

To determine if midwifery care is appropriate for you, we will review your medical history. Some clients may require physician-led care for medical reasons. In those cases, referrals to appropriate care providers will be made.

If you are eligible and we have availability near your due date, we will schedule your first appointment. If fully booked, you may join our waiting list. This list is reviewed regularly. When new midwives join, or when clients move or transfer care, we offer available spots to individuals on the list. Being on the waiting list also supports our Ministry of Health funding requests, helping grow midwifery access in our community.

Choice of Birthplace

Midwives in Ontario are trained and licensed to attend births at home and in hospital. Genesis Midwives holds admitting and discharge privileges at WRHN @ Midtown (formerly Grand River Hospital) in Kitchener. We also carry all necessary equipment and medications for safe home births.

We respect and support your choice of birthplace. Discuss your preferences at your prenatal visits.
